Subaru Launches Dog Tested, Dog Approved App for iPhone

Subaru just launched an app for the iPhone called MapMyDOGWALK, in coordination with the already-existing MapMyDISTANCE. MapMyDOGWALK gives app owners opportunity to track and store their walking routes with their canine, providing a database of millions of routes. Also included in the app are fitness calculators, dog event listings, and an interactive social network filled with other active Subaru and dog lovers.

This is such an awesome app! Hopefully they'll release another for people with alternative phones - but lucky you, iPhone users. I love how Subaru is constantly promoting health and wellness, and of course love for our furry friends. Even something so simple as an iPhone mobile app shows that the happiness and well-being of Subaru owners and dog fanatics alike is really important to Subaru as a whole.

Here are a few small screen shots from the app store so you can get a look at what the app actually looks like on screen. It includes calories burned, heart rate, steps taken, time, interactive maps of your area and more (all of which automatically syncs with your account that you can view online). I'm downloading mine now - Oh yeah, did I mention it's free?

When do groceries go on sale?

Here's an article resembling last week's about when to buy things in 2012. This post tells you when grocery products go on sale so you know which months of the year to stock up on certain goods.

According to this article, grocery items don't seem to be quite as sneaky about what time of year they go on sale. For example, sweets are cheaper in February because of Valentine's Day, as are snacks due to the Superbowl. Still - it's handy to know when groceries are overstocking so you can save your wallet when you head to the store.

Check out the full article here for more info, as well as download their printable version so you can plan out your shopping for the whole season. Enjoy!

Ready to hit the mountain?

Bolton Valley, the resort with the highest base elevation in Vermont, received 4-6 inches of snow last night and has 27 trails open! Night skiing is open until 8 p.m. and Bolton is ready to host some more skiers and snowboarders now that snow is finally falling and the trails are fresh and groomed as of this morning.

More importantly, Bolton Valley is selling all of their helmets to season pass holders for 20-30 percent off in honor of National Safety Week. They're also raffling off six Bolton Valley "Ski it Ride it Love it" hoodies over the course of the week.

Also, today is the last day to go between 4-7 p.m. to Ski and Snowboard Express in Richmond to get your $29 Bolton Valley lift tickets.

Check out the full snow report here.

iPhone app to compete with Siri

Here's an app that was posted by Lifehacker called Vokul, it's a voice-recognition application that can be used somewhat like the iPhone 4s' Siri. The app isn't quite as extensive as Siri; you can't ask "her" where to buy something, what to do this Friday or how much an air conditioner costs, but you can text hands-free as well as play and pause your music, among other things. And since the app is completely hands-free, it is safe to use while you're driving.

Check out the video below - it's not perfect, but if you're like me and stuck to a year-long contract with the iPhone 3 or 4, it may be just what you're looking for.

Dave Higgins Defends Title with Subaru

Subaru rally champion of 2011, Dave Higgins, will remain as a Subaru factory driver on the 2012 team. Dave Mirra will also drive for Subaru, but will be focusing on the Global RallyCross Championship because of conflicting dates.

Higgins produced three victories and two second overall finishes in the 2011 championship. He also made a new record when he had another victory at the Mount Washington Hillclimb.

"The 2011 Rally America driver's title was the third for Higgins in the United States, having won the SCCA ProRally Championship in 2002 and 2003. Higgins also took the British Rally Championship in 2004," says the article on Autoweek.

When to buy anything in 2012.

The most popularly searched videos worldwide are "how-to" videos. Today we've got an amazing "when-to" instead. Lifehacker.com just posted a blog on the best times to make purchases on just about anything in 2012. They took statistics and information from a vast array of sources to define when exactly certain products go on sale, and therefore - when you should buy them.

This blog idea is fantastic. Some of them are more obvious; buying TVs on Black Friday, snow gear in the spring, golf clubs in the winter, etc. But did you know that it's best to buy champagne in the spring? Neither did I.

It's because most weddings are in the spring and champagne makers compete like crazy to be the champagne of choice during nuptials (the same goes for right before New Year's Eve). And did you know that mattress manufacturers release their new products in the summer? So it's best to buy a new mattress in May.

As for January, it's currently prime time to buy:
  • bicycles/sporting goods
  • Broadway tickets
  • calendars
  • carpeting/flooring
  • digital cameras
  • furniture
  • gift cards
  • HDTV/home theater gear
  • digital frames
  • linings & bedding
  • motorcycles
  • office furniture
  • video games

IRENE RECOVERY DONATIONS
(NORWOOD, MA) “Subaru of New England has proudly been doing business in Vermont for over forty years. It breaks my heart that this is happening to the State I love, that due to the devastation of Tropical Storm Irene so many homeowners, businesses, and the infrastructure of Vermont’s beautiful roads have been destroyed. Today I have joined forces with Governor Shumlin and become one of his ‘Corporate Angels’ in the Irene recovery efforts. On behalf of the entire Subaru of New England family, I am donating a check for $100,000.00 dollars to the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund, stated Ernie Boch Jr,” President & CEO of Subaru of New England.
Donations received from ‘Corporate Angels’ around the country provide housing, food assistance and case management, along with a full-range of resources for people who were impacted by Tropical Storm Irene. “These donors have stepped forward to provide well over one million dollars towards Vermont’s recovery,” said Governor Shumlin. “This assistance will provide both short and long term recovery opportunities to Vermonters who need help getting back on their feet.”
People who are still interested in donating to assist in Tropical Storm Irene recovery efforts can call 1-800-VERMONT to donate to either the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund or the Vermont – New Hampshire Red Cross Chapter.
