2013 Subaru Outback Review

"Reviewers say the 2013 Outback successfully combines the utility of an SUV with the drive-ability of a car, making it one of the best wagons in the class," according to a review by US News.

The 2013 Outback of course is equipped with Subaru's standard AWD. It also has the option of either a four-cylinder engine (best for commuting and in-town driving), or six-cylinder, which is best for highway passing, merging and navigating hilly terrain.

According to US News' review, it drives like a sedan, but has confident handling and a smooth ride. Yet another top safety pick from the IIHS, the 2013 Subaru Outback has a roomy, nicely-built interior, fully equipped with the all-new Subaru EyeSight system and Bluetooth phone and music connectivity.

Burlington Eats Local This Week!

City Market's Eat Local Week Starts this Saturday, Oct. 6 and goes through the following Sunday, Oct. 14.

Eat Local Week presented by City Market is "Burlington's celebration of local farms and local food," according to the website. Included in the week of celebrating Vermont's amazing farmers and delicious food are Eat Local events, a photo contest and fully-local menu items at participating restaurants.

Eat Local events include a Grande Isle Bike Tour where participants will visit a vineyard, farm, art gallery and cafe, as well as tastings, treats and lunch included in the package. There's also a 10th Annual Harvest Celebration, which gathers together local farmers and producers with lots of samples, prize giveaways, face painting and kids' activities, among other things! The photo contest is called "Who Grew Your Food?" Where you can enter to win a gift card to City Market by taking a picture of your local meal, and in the caption tag each farm or local producer who grew the ingredients in your dish. For the full contest details, click here!

The participating restaurants are New Moon, Pistou, the Skinny Pancake, Sugar Snap, the Farmhouse Tap & Grill, Leunig's Bistro, City Market and Bluebird Tavern. Subaru EyeSight System Tested

If you haven't heard of the Subaru EyeSight driver-assist technology, it is a camera-based technology designed to assist drivers in seeing obstacles or dangers that will potentially lead to a collision. EyeSight is currently limited to the 2013 Legacy and 2013 Outback, but will be showing up in more models in the next model year.

The reason why Subaru's EyeSight is so revolutionary is because it's typically a technology found only in luxury cars. Subaru is the first to make technology like this available at an affordable price. Car and Driver went out with Subaru to test the EyeSight system and just posted their first-hand review of the technology.

"EyeSight employs a pair of forward-facing stereoscopic cameras mounted inside the car on either side of the rear-view mirror, which are connected to the throttle and brakes. The cameras and corresponding software “scan” the road ahead (up to 87 yards ahead of the car) and can initiate a series of collision warnings and avoidance measures if it determines a collision is imminent. EyeSight also includes lane-departure warnings—it can “see” lane markings and determine the car’s position within them. The adaptive cruise control can bring the car to a complete stop from speeds of up to 87 mph, but drivers are prompted to accelerate from a stop—the system won’t get the car going again on its own. A push of a button or a touch of the accelerator resumes the cruise control’s functionality, and the car will accelerate back to the set speed on its own from there," according to Car and Driver.

The reviewers went through a chunk of tests, from head-on collisions and lane departure (the collisions, which EyeSight prevented, were into foam walls - so no possible injuries!). They found the system to be very effective, and were also keen on hearing that when it doubt, the car goes with the action of the driver (meaning there won't be any loss of control of the vehicle for the driver, and the driver also has the option of turning the system off completely). They did have one concern, however, which is that it's a camera-based system so that in the case of bad weather it won't be as effective.

2013 Subaru BRZ Scores Top Safety Pick Status from the IIHS

2013 Subaru BRZ Crash Test Video

Last week, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) announced that the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S received Top Safety Pick status. The first video shows a side impact test, where the vehicle gets hit by another object going 31 mph. The second video is a head on collision, where the BRZ runs into a wall at 40 mph. The videos shown are of the Scion FR-S, but as they're structurally identical, the Subaru BRZ will perform and react the same way in a collision.

Typically light-weight sports cars do not perform this well in crash tests, so Subaru lovers who are potential or current parents and family members have no fear of the BRZ's performance in the case of accident.
