Subaru Safety Insider Tips

Subaru recommends the NHTSA insider tips:

Subaru Safety Insider Tips
The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released survey results that show Americans use their electronic devices while driving, even though there's been extensive warnings that it impairs their driving ability and can lead to crashes, injury and even death.

According to the data, more than 3,300 people were killed in 2011, and 387,000 were injured in accidents that were the result of a distracted driver. To prevent this type of driving, the Department of Transportation recommends:
  • Turn off electronic devices and put them out of reach before driving
  • Be a good role model for younger drivers; speak with your teens about responsible driving
  • Speak up when you're a passenger and you driver uses a device while driving; offer to make the call for the driver
  • Always wear your seatbelt; they're your best defense!

2014 Subaru Forester Ranks High in Crash Test

Subaru safety is still top priority on Subaru vehicles

2014 Subaru Forester Safety
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has just published new crash test results for 13 different small SUVs. This was the first time that the IIHS tested for "small overlap protection in a test that represents a crash in which only the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle, or a tree or pole," wrote ABC news, quoting the IIHS. These types of crashes are not only one of the most common, but they account for almost 24 percent of severe injury and death in frontal crashes.

2014 Subaru Forester Safety
Just two models received high marks at all; the 2014 Subaru Forester, which "aced the test" and the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, which received an "acceptable". Want to be in this extremely-safe small SUV? View our 2014 Subaru Forester inventory here.

The History of Subaru Crash Testing

What goes into Subaru safety?

Subaru Safety - IIHS Top Safety Pick
Subaru is the only manufacturer with IIHS Top Safety Picks for all of its models - and this has been true for the last four years. Before there were standardized and regulated crash safety tests, manufacturers would just go with what they thought was best to limit damage and injuries caused by a crash. Subaru has been going strong with conducting crash tests since 1965, which is shown in the video below - putting safety at the top of their list from early on.

Check out the video below, and if you'd like to be driving one of Subaru's safe models, take a look at our new Subaru inventory here.

Should I Shave My Dog in the Summer?

It's been a hot couple of weeks here in Burlington, and for many of us dog owners the question of whether or not it's best to shave our dogs this summer has arisen. It seems the obvous thing to do; if we were wearing a thick fur coat, we'd want to take it off in 80 degree weather too. But for most dogs, this isn't the case.

Should I shave my dog in the summer? Burlington Subaru Pet Feature
^^My double coated, panting & hot pup!
Double coated dogs are dogs that have a heavy undercoat, which is the lighter coat that sheds naturally. If you have a Golden, Shepherd, Chow, etc. your dog has a double coat. These dogs have hefty fur and seem like they'd really benefit from a cut, but these are the ones you shouldn't shave. However, dogs like the Poodle, Maltese, Shih Tzu, etc. do not have undercoats and if you're an owner of one of these, you probably are already aware that they do need regular grooming and haircuts! Double coated dog owners read on!

A dog's coat (and cat's too!) works like a thermostat as a temperature regulator; it has many layers that are essential to your pooch's comfort. When shaved, your dog loses its natural cooling system and not only will be uncomfortable and hotter than before, but can also get a nasty sunburn and has a higher risk of getting skin cancer.

Should I shave my dog in the summer? Burlington Subaru Pet Feature
"A dog's coat is kind of like insulation for your house," said Vice President of ASPCA Bergh Memorial Hospital Dr. Louise Murray. "Insulation stops your home from getting too cold in winter, but it also keeps it from overheating in summer -- and your dog's coat does the same thing."

Dog's skin, unlike humans, does not possess blood vessels and sweat glands that keep us cooler in hot conditions. They do have sweat glands in their footpads, but they play a small role in thermoregulation, according to Veterinary Insider.

So how do you keep your dog cool in the heat?

Should I shave my dog in the summer? Burlington Subaru Pet Feature
  • Cold water: try putting ice cubes in your dog's water bowl on hot days; some dogs really love ice cubes!
  • Shade: dog's primary cool-down mechanism is panting, which works best if the air around them is cooler than their body temperature
  • Brush them: this helps to remove dead undercoat, which helps air circulate near their skin. "A well-brushed coat has 'loft,' allowing air to circulate within it and cool the pet while offering natural protection against the elements," according to DogChannel
Need more info? It's always a good idea to ask your Veterinarian. He or she will be the most familiar with your pet, their breed, and know more about what's best for your dog in particular.

Coming Soon: The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid

The first-ever Subaru hybrid vehicle will be the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid

Subaru built their own hybrid system for the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid, without relying on technology from existing hybrid models. The transmission, while based on the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), was developed exclusively for the hybrid model.

The hybrid version of the Subaru XV Crosstrek will more or less be the same as its non-hybrid sibling, just with better fuel economy, less of a footprint, and no loss of power with its 13.4 horsepower and 48lb ft of torque.

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek HybridAs Subaru says, "wherever you go, you can feel good about how you get there." The XV Crosstrek Hybrid is expected to arrive at dealerships late fall of 2013. Stay updated by checking up on our 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek page here!
