Check Out This Electric Car... From 1932

Take a look at the Dynosphere. This 1932 vehicle weighed in at 1,000 lbs, and although it was electric, it wasn't exactly practical. Just imagine what our lives would have been like if this model had taken off and become popular?

Merrill Continues to Get "Down and Dirty"

Merrill just renewed its contract with Michael Epstein Sports Productions as the title sponsor for Merrell Down & Dirty National Mud and Obstacle Series, which is presented by Subaru. The course consists of either a 5 or 10k series of military-style obstacles, strength tests and mud crawling. The event so far has raised $100,000 to benefit a nonprofit organization called Operation Gratitude that sends personalized care packages to troops overseas.

This sounds awesome! And so Vermont, so Merrill, and so Subaru. It's too bad that there isn't an actual event in Vermont (the closest one is in NY). Although I have heard many people talking about the Tough Mudder coming up on May 5 - the two sound similar. For some reason the thought of this Merrill/Subaru combo race is exciting to me, and the Tough Mudder slightly terrifying. The Tough Mudder has also raised money for soldiers, however; so far donating more than $2 million to the Wounded Warrior Project. I think it's just the barbed wire that turns me off of that one.

How to: Use Google Alerts to Avoid Identity Theft

Here's an easy how-to on protecting your identity by using Google Alerts. All you need to do to set this up is a computer with Internet access. If you don't already know how to use Google Alerts, just click here. But it's pretty simple to use by trial and error.

Skip the next two paragraphs if you already know how Google Alerts works!

The way Google Alerts works, and my apologies if this is way too basic (you never know), is you go to the Google Alerts homepage and type in a search query you want Google to notify you about. For example, to help me find blog and social media post ideas, I use "Subaru News" and "Subaru Press Release" in my search field. That way, whenever an article or page is posted pertaining to Subaru news or press releases Google Alerts sends me an email. Now, you can have them send you an email straight away by choosing "email ______ (your email)" or "feed", which just puts the link up on your Google Reader home screen.

If you're using Google Alerts for something that has heavy volume (Subaru News), I'd recommend putting it in your feed and not to your personal email. It can be very distracting/annoying/overwhelming, etc. to have 60 emails a day coming in for every search query you've chosen.

Back to business - all you have to do is put any
personal information you want monitored in the "search query" tab. For example you could use your name, phone number, address, driver's license number, license plate number, email address, etc. Then choose "Everything", "As-it-happens" and "All results".

"Deliver to" is where you can choose your email address or feed. For this type of a time-sensitive alert, I would recommend putting your email address.

Create Alert, and done! No identity theft for you. If you'd like to read the full article for a more basic step-by-step instruction, click here.

Do it yourself heated slippers

Here's a do-it-yourself from Lifehacker on making your own heated slippers. Even though it's been warm this week, I think we can all expect a snowy winter here in VT. I haven't tried this one (yet), but it doesn't look too tricky. All you need is some cozy fabric, a sewing kit, a pair of your own shoes (for sizing purposes), scissors, tape, a pen and paper, and some rice.

Sounds doable, and functional! I can't wait to try these out. I don't know about you - but my house is very old and not very toasty.

Stanford Professor Creates Free Online School

Google Fellow and Stanford Research Professor, Sebastian Thrun resigned from Stanford in order to instruct a program he designed called Udacity, which will teach online computer science classes 100 percent free of charge. Thrun is joined by University of Virginia Professor of Computer Science, David Evans.

The first two courses they will be teaching are CS 101: Building a Search Engine and CS 373: Programming a Robotic Car. The first class is to go over a seven-week span, and is promised to make the student fluent enough in building search engines to create an engine like Google or Yahoo. Thrun's typical class size of 200 has been minimized to 30 for the online course, but still - taking Stanford classes for free is no small feat.

The natural-born teachers are the ones who do it just so others can learn; not for the money - which is a trait that's simply not feasible in this country or economy (unless you come from a hefty monetary background, or if you're like Thrun who I'm assuming has made plenty of dough teaching at Stanford and working with Google). You know you've got a real passion for teaching when your retirement hones you straight back into doing your job for no income.

Good for Professors Thrun and Evans! This is a truly amazing program and the participants are without a doubt extremely thankful for his generosity and drive for learning.

Subaru Launches Dog Tested, Dog Approved App for iPhone

Subaru just launched an app for the iPhone called MapMyDOGWALK, in coordination with the already-existing MapMyDISTANCE. MapMyDOGWALK gives app owners opportunity to track and store their walking routes with their canine, providing a database of millions of routes. Also included in the app are fitness calculators, dog event listings, and an interactive social network filled with other active Subaru and dog lovers.

This is such an awesome app! Hopefully they'll release another for people with alternative phones - but lucky you, iPhone users. I love how Subaru is constantly promoting health and wellness, and of course love for our furry friends. Even something so simple as an iPhone mobile app shows that the happiness and well-being of Subaru owners and dog fanatics alike is really important to Subaru as a whole.

Here are a few small screen shots from the app store so you can get a look at what the app actually looks like on screen. It includes calories burned, heart rate, steps taken, time, interactive maps of your area and more (all of which automatically syncs with your account that you can view online). I'm downloading mine now - Oh yeah, did I mention it's free?

When do groceries go on sale?

Here's an article resembling last week's about when to buy things in 2012. This post tells you when grocery products go on sale so you know which months of the year to stock up on certain goods.

According to this article, grocery items don't seem to be quite as sneaky about what time of year they go on sale. For example, sweets are cheaper in February because of Valentine's Day, as are snacks due to the Superbowl. Still - it's handy to know when groceries are overstocking so you can save your wallet when you head to the store.

Check out the full article here for more info, as well as download their printable version so you can plan out your shopping for the whole season. Enjoy!

Ready to hit the mountain?

Bolton Valley, the resort with the highest base elevation in Vermont, received 4-6 inches of snow last night and has 27 trails open! Night skiing is open until 8 p.m. and Bolton is ready to host some more skiers and snowboarders now that snow is finally falling and the trails are fresh and groomed as of this morning.

More importantly, Bolton Valley is selling all of their helmets to season pass holders for 20-30 percent off in honor of National Safety Week. They're also raffling off six Bolton Valley "Ski it Ride it Love it" hoodies over the course of the week.

Also, today is the last day to go between 4-7 p.m. to Ski and Snowboard Express in Richmond to get your $29 Bolton Valley lift tickets.

Check out the full snow report here.

iPhone app to compete with Siri

Here's an app that was posted by Lifehacker called Vokul, it's a voice-recognition application that can be used somewhat like the iPhone 4s' Siri. The app isn't quite as extensive as Siri; you can't ask "her" where to buy something, what to do this Friday or how much an air conditioner costs, but you can text hands-free as well as play and pause your music, among other things. And since the app is completely hands-free, it is safe to use while you're driving.

Check out the video below - it's not perfect, but if you're like me and stuck to a year-long contract with the iPhone 3 or 4, it may be just what you're looking for.

Dave Higgins Defends Title with Subaru

Subaru rally champion of 2011, Dave Higgins, will remain as a Subaru factory driver on the 2012 team. Dave Mirra will also drive for Subaru, but will be focusing on the Global RallyCross Championship because of conflicting dates.

Higgins produced three victories and two second overall finishes in the 2011 championship. He also made a new record when he had another victory at the Mount Washington Hillclimb.

"The 2011 Rally America driver's title was the third for Higgins in the United States, having won the SCCA ProRally Championship in 2002 and 2003. Higgins also took the British Rally Championship in 2004," says the article on Autoweek.

When to buy anything in 2012.

The most popularly searched videos worldwide are "how-to" videos. Today we've got an amazing "when-to" instead. Lifehacker.com just posted a blog on the best times to make purchases on just about anything in 2012. They took statistics and information from a vast array of sources to define when exactly certain products go on sale, and therefore - when you should buy them.

This blog idea is fantastic. Some of them are more obvious; buying TVs on Black Friday, snow gear in the spring, golf clubs in the winter, etc. But did you know that it's best to buy champagne in the spring? Neither did I.

It's because most weddings are in the spring and champagne makers compete like crazy to be the champagne of choice during nuptials (the same goes for right before New Year's Eve). And did you know that mattress manufacturers release their new products in the summer? So it's best to buy a new mattress in May.

As for January, it's currently prime time to buy:
  • bicycles/sporting goods
  • Broadway tickets
  • calendars
  • carpeting/flooring
  • digital cameras
  • furniture
  • gift cards
  • HDTV/home theater gear
  • digital frames
  • linings & bedding
  • motorcycles
  • office furniture
  • video games
