The 2014 Subaru Forester, 2014 Legacy and 2014 Outback all Receive IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Accolade

Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+
Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist System
Since Sept. 2013 the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) began using more rigorous standards for their Top Safety Pick+ accolade. Last year the TSP+ was created for vehicles that passed the new small overlap crash test, this year it includes crash prevention technology. The IIHS has recently published new models that have achieved the highest honor, which includes the 2014 Subaru Forester, 2014 Legacy and 2014 Outback; these three are part of a group of just 22 vehicles that made the cut.

The three Subaru models that have been awarded the TSP+ honor are all fully equipped with Subaru's EyeSight Driver Assist System, part of the IIHS' requirement for crash prevention technology for the TSP+ honorees. To achieve the TSP+ accolade, a vehicle must receive a Basic score in crash prevention, but all three Subaru vehicles earned a perfect score, granting them the Superior rating!

Share the Love with the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf

Subaru Share the Love Event - Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf
In honor of Subaru's annual Share the Love Event and in honor of our partnership with the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf (CEFS) this year, we'd like to share a little bit more of what CEFS is all about! They're not just a food shelf; they offer much more to help Vermonters who are in need in one way or another. If you haven't already, check out our Share the Love page for more info on the event, and catch up below on all of the other programs that CEFS has to offer!

Food Shelf
The main program at CEFS, where they provide a monthly five-day supply of groceries to families in need, and also offer fresh produce and bread five days per week.

Soup Kitchen
Open to the entire community, the soup kitchen serves a hot meal every day, Monday through Friday from 6:30-9:30 a.m., Sunday morning from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., and Sunday evening from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Community Kitchen Academy
Subaru Share the Love Event - Chittenden Emergency Food ShelfThis is a Vermont Foodbank culinary job training program that's operated at CEFS. There are 14-week sessions containing 10-12 students that are aimed at helping to prepare them with the culinary skills necessary to secure jobs in the food industry.

Homebound Grocery Delivery
This program is to address hunger relief for populations with mobility issues, whether that be senior citizens or those with disabilities. Staff and volunteers deliver a five-day supply of grocieries each month, and are currently serving 150 households through the program.

Brown Bag Lunch
This is an annual summertime program that's aimed at children coming from low-income families. The children receive free lunches and other various school-based food assistance throughout the school year. CEFS uses fresh fruits and vegetables to insure that children are given a balanced lunch, which is particularly needed during school breaks when families cannot depend on school food assistance.

Project Angel Food
This program rescues food from local grocery stores and delivers it to a variety of local programs.

Anne's Clothing Corner
Located at CEFS, Anne's Clothing Corner is a volunteer-run clothing corner that's filled with clothes that are collected from the community by a volunteer and given to their guests for free.

Share the Love Donation Update

Burlington Subaru Share the Love Food Drive
As of Tuesday, we've raised $16,250 for the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf! We wanted to first thank our customers who have purchased new Subaru vehicles and chosen CEFS as their charity of choice to receive $250 from Subaru, and second to thank those who have stopped in to help fill our Subaru Outback with non-perishables for the Food Shelf!

We are exactly halfway through the Share the Love Event, which started on Nov. 21 and ends on Jan. 2. Our goal is to reach $31,000.

Let's take a look at the impact these donations can have on Vermonters who are in need.

With $16,250 CEFS can:
Burlington Subaru Share the Love Event
Provide 48,750 meals
Offer 65 families of four a two & a half week supply of groceries
Buy 8,125lbs of food

If we reach our goal! CEFS can:

Provide 93,000 meals
Offer 124 families of four a two & a half week supply of groceries
Buy 15,500lbs of food

It's amazing to see these numbers on paper, and to see how a little amount of money goes such a long way at CEFS. We hope to be able to donate more than a little, so it goes an even longer way! To read up on the annual event, head to our Share the Love page here.

Subaru History: the Subaru 360 Minicar

Subaru 360 Minicar History
The Subaru 360 minicar was released on March 3, 1958. At the time, Japanese automakers had been progressing towards developing smaller "people's cars" as advocated by the government in Japan.

Since Subaru was an experienced aircraft manufacturing company, it took to the challenge of building a small, affordable vehicle that would still Subaru 360 Minicar History maintain good performance. The Subaru 360 was born from this challenge as a four-passenger, four-wheel minicar that ended up becoming a milestone in Japan's automobile history.

The Subaru 360 was given the nickname "Ladybird" because of its unique shape, and was extremely popular for over a decade before its production came to a close in 1970.

Subaru has certainly continued progressing since the Subaru 360 minicar, with a full model line of IIHS Top Safety Picks due to Subaru's advanced safety design, as well as several other distinguishing awards and accolades. Check out our new Subaru inventory here!

Subaru Share the Love Update: History of the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf

Burlington Subaru Share the Love - Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf
In honor of our ongoing Share the Love Event, we wanted to share the history of the amazing work that the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf does. As of today, we've raised $12,5000 for the Food Shelf! Share the Love runs through the end of the month so be sure to check out our Share the Love page for more info!

The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf (CEFS) was the result of community churches and synagogues working together to address the issue of hunger throughout Chittenden County in 1974. At the time, the Food Shelf was located in a small roof that was run by a single person who was assisted by volunteers -- they provided a three-day supply of groceries to local families each month as a Grocery Distribution Program.

In 1978, the Food Shelf became a program of the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO), whose mission is “the elimination of poverty in the midst of plenty.” In 1982, the Food Shelf also became a member agency of the United Way. That year CEFS moved to a larger location to accommodate greater demand; their new location had access to a kitchen and began serving a hot breakfast every morning Monday-Friday.

Burlington Subaru Share the Love - Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf
Since then, CEFS has relocated to larger sites twice, which includes its latest move in 1994 to its current location, which was built through the RELIEF Capital Campaign. In response to even higher demand for hunger relief services, the Food Shelf began the Homebound Delivery Program in 1998, which is alternative food resources to assist those who are homebound seniors or disabled adults.

Today, in addition to direct hunger relief services, the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf also houses a comprehensive culinary job training program called Community Kitchen, to provide a long-term solution to the cycle of hunger and poverty.

FAQs About the Annual Subaru Share the Love Event

In lieu of the annual Share the Love Event, we figured some people may have a few questions about how it works, and how the charities chosen by the customers receive their donations. If you have any more questions that aren't addressed below, please post a comment and we'll get back to you as quickly as possible! To learn even more about the event, head to our Share the Love page here!

Subaru Share the Love Event FAQs
Q: How do I select the charity or charities I want to receive the donation?

A: At time of delivery you will be asked to provide your name, contact information, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and charity selection. Burlington Subaru will send in your selection and Subaru will then make the donation on your behalf.

Q: What if I want to split the donation (i.e. select more than one charity) or vote more than once?

A: Each customer who has purchased or leased a new Subaru (2013 or 2014) can either allocate the $250 donation to one charity, or split it amongst any number of participating charities. Only one donation (of $250) is made per vehicle sale or lease.

Q: I bought a car, but forgot to submit my charity selection. Where does the money go?

A: For those who do not make their charity selection by January 31, 2014, Subaru will distribute the donation evenly among the five national charities.

Subaru Share the Love Event FAQs
Q: How will I know that the donation was made?

A: You will receive a "thank you" letter from Subaru and the charities that received your donation once all of the submissions have been processed.

Q: By what date will Subaru make the donations to each charity? How much money is expected to be donated?

A: Subaru will make the donation to each charity by March 1, 2014. During last year's "Share the Love" event, Subaru donated $5 million, and Subaru is hoping to donate up to $10 million this year. Over the past four years of the event, $25 million have been donated.

Q: Do I get a tax credit for this donation?

A:Because the donation is being made by Subaru to each of the participating charities, donations are not tax-deductible to purchasers.

Q: Why do some retailers have 5 charity options and others have 6 charity options?

Subaru Share the Love Event FAQsA: This year, Subaru of America offered the retailer community an optional opportunity to select a sixth charity, local to their community, to join the national five charities in the "Share the Love" event. While some retailers are participating in this option, others chose to participate solely with the five nationals charities. That's why we're partnered up with the local Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf as our charity of choice!

Burlington Subaru to Partner with the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf for 2013 Share the Love Event

We're thrilled to announce that we'll be teaming up with the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf (CEFS) for this year's Share the Love event! Please check out our press release below, we've highlighted the ways you can help the cause in green so they're easy to spot:

From Nov. 21, 2013 to Jan. 2, 2014, Subaru will donate $250 for every new Subaru sold or leased to the customer's choice of six charities; ASPCA, Make-A-Wish, Meals On Wheels Association of America, National Park Foundation, Teach for America or a local nonprofit chosen by the Subaru dealer; at Burlington Subaru, they’ve chosen to support CEFS.

“We’re so pleased to have the opportunity to work with a local nonprofit in conjunction with this year’s Share the Love Event,” said Burlington Subaru General Manager Steve Kelson. “We’re honored to help provide assistance to an organization that does so much for local Vermonters in need.”

Kelson says that their goal is to raise $30,000 during the time of the Share the Love Event for CEFS. According to CEFS Development Manager Sophia Morton this would be huge for the program. Three meals come from just $1 according to Morton; $250 provides 750 meals, while $12,500 provides 37,500. If Burlington Subaru succeeds in their goal of raising $30,000 it would mean that 90,000 meals could be provided to those in need.

Burlington Subaru will also be offering their customers $5 off of their service appointments if they bring in one or more cans of food for donations. Kelson says that they have a Subaru Outback in the dealership showroom that they are hoping to fill completely with donated food; the goal is to collect at least 500 cans.

For those looking for yet another way to provide donations to the Food Shelf, Burlington Subaru will be giving up to $1,000 via their Facebook. They ask that Facebook users go to the Burlington Subaru page and “share” the dealership’s designated post regarding CEFS. For each share of these posts they will donate $5, up to $1,000. The extra $1,000 coming from Facebook shares alone will provide an additional 3,000 meals, equaling a total donation of 93,000 meals, on top of the 500 cans collected in the Outback.

CEFS provides meals six days per week as well as a variety of other hunger-relief programs. They offer a five-day supply of groceries once per month to those in need, as well as a delivery program for those who are unable to come in. There are also opportunities for people to come in five days per week to receive fresh produce and bread.

CEFS currently serves over 12,000 people each year. For a full description of all of CEFS current hunger-relief programs, please visit their website here. For more information regarding the Share the Love Event or Burlington Subaru’s sponsorship, please contact Steve Kelson at (802) 448-3856.

Transformation Tuesday: The Subaru Legacy

1989 Subaru Legacy - Burlington Subaru Transformation Tuesday
For our own version of "Transformation Tuesday", we've decided to do a few then-and-now features of Subaru models. First up is the Subaru Legacy, which has come an enormously long way since its introduction in 1989 - just look at the photo! Even passenger airbags weren't standard in the original Legacy; those came in 1995 with the Legacy's second generation.

Now, the Subaru Legacy has a slew of safety features (to go with its convenience and entertainment features) including:

  • EyeSight Driver Assist system (monitors traffic movement, optimizes cruise control and gives lane-departure warning)
  • Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
  • Smart braking system
  • Vehicle dynamics control (Subaru's Vehicle Dynamics Control)
  • Advanced protection system (this includes Subaru's extensive airbag inventory as well as its successful frame)

Watch the Emergency Vehicle Operations Center's "Crossover Vehicle Challenge"!

Five crossover vehicles are put to the test!

2014 Subaru Forester - Emergency Vehicle Operations Center
The Emergency Vehicle Operations Center is designed to teach first responders about adverse driving conditions that they'll experience while protecting the public. They conducted a experiment to see which of the top five crossover vehicles performed best in an array of driving conditions.

2014 Subaru Forester - Emergency Vehicle Operations Center I'm sure you could guess -- but Subaru was their favorite by far! They loved Subaru's X-Mode (the system that helps brake and maneuver when you're driving on rough terrain, keeping the ride more smooth and safe), and on top of their other favorite moments, the Subaru Forester was the only one in the video that made it through the snow!

Check out the video below, and if you love the Forester in it, take a look at our 2014 Subaru Forester inventory here, or browse any of our new Subaru models here.

Meet our Burlington Subaru Sales Manager, Brady Burgess.

Brady Burgess - Burlington Subaru Sales Manager
A Northeastern University graduate, Brady has lived in Vermont for over 30 years, though if he could travel anywhere in the world he would choose to go to Australia. His favorite Vermont beer is the Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter, and his favorite song is Slim Shady by Eminem.

Brady's biggest fear is (was) filling out his staff form for his bio, though if he hadn't, we wouldn't know about his favorite pastime -- Brady Burgess - Burlington Subaru Sales Manager bolphing! He even has his own bolph course. What is "bolph" you may ask? In Brady's own words:

"Bolph is a wonderful game invented and played in my hometown of Lincoln. It is the same as golf but instead of using golf clubs and balls you use softball bats and balls, cricket bats, wooden paddles and croquet-style mallets for putting. There are two courses; each covers roughly 10 acres."

Check out his video below, or head to Brady's full staff page for more info!

Study Shows Many Pet Safety Restraints for Vehicles are Unsafe

Subaru and the Center for Pet Safety Announce Full Study Crash Testing Results

Subaru Pet Safety Restraint Testing
Subaru and the Center for Pet Safety (CPS) teamed up earlier in the year to create a standard for pet safety restraint testing as well as test the effectiveness for current marketed harnesses (you can check out our blog on the subject here for more info). What they found is that there are many serious flaws in a lot of the popular pet safety restraints for sale today. Not only that, but many of the tests resulted in huge failure.

Center for Pet Safety Harness Crashworthiness Study The purpose of this study is to reiterate the importance of driving safely with pets, as well as assist in the creation of safety standards for pet harnesses by using the data collected in the study.

The overall test results did show that Sleepypod’s Clickit Utility Harness was the clear top brand; it was the only one that consistently kept the crash test dog from launching off of the seat as well as offer substantial protection to passengers, according to Subaru’s press release.

To check out Sleepypod's Clickit Harness click here, or to see the full test results head to the Center for Pet Safety site here.
